“Ms. Alexander, We’re Learning!”

April 17, 2009

par-can1Yes, it’s another “Kids Say” moment.

I invented an activity to help the kids memorize their lighting instruments/vocabulary.  I have been very frustrated with my Lighting lessons.  I just don’t know how to make them fun.  I had them play with different colored lights on different fabrics, and I tried to make gobos but they didn’t work.  In the end it came down to me realizing they just had to memorize the information and I hate that!  So I thought long and hard about how to make it more fun, and the light bulb finally clicked on in the shower that morning.

I gave each student a lighting instrument/term and had them create characters out of them.  They then went around a circle and introduced themselves.  But not only did they introduce themselves, they had to introduce everyone they had previously met as well.  As they went around the circle it became easier and easier for them to do.  I was totally beaming inside when one of my students leaned over and said to me, wide-eyed, “Ms. Alexander, we’re learning!”

Yeah….  That’s kind of the point.

I posted details of the activity on my “Lessons” page if you’re interested.
